Translations :

    My works on translation and translatology, published in scholarly journals, have been acknowledged by eminent scholars for example, Amlan Duttta, the then Upacharya of Visva-Bharati, specially mentions my name in the ‘Foreward' to Introduction to Tagore, Visva-Bharati, (1983) , in connection with the above.

    My paper published in Perspectives: Studies in Translatology, 1995: 2, Denmark ; University of Copenhagen and Revaluations (Bhubaneswar 1997), may also be mentioned in this connection. I have also edited a book on Translation Studies, Studies in Translation (New Delhi ,2002).

    Among the major fictional works of Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941), the multifaceted genius, Gora (1910), the sixth in the chronological order , is remarkable for its superb handling of contemporary social-religious-political controversies while reflecting some of the author's major preoccupations which worked as the driving force behind his personal life as well as his great creative and critical oeuvre. Religion and nationalism, which necessarily got intersected during those days of newly awakened cultural nationalism in India , found reflection in the novel. Tagore's own idealism and ideals about India, his thoughts, activities, his anguish, his dreams and disillusionment, all work together behind Gora . Significantly, in spite of all this Gora remains relevant across space and time for its message of universal humanism.

    The translators have attempted to strike a fine balance between fidelity and freedom by conveying the spirit of the original and yet conforming to the genius of English language. It will enable those who do not have enough proficiency in Bengali to enjoy a novel written by no less a mighty figure than Rabindranath Tagore.

    The translation also includes a very well-written insightful ‘Introduction' to the novel.
